Fellow Landscapers Blog: Best Time to Plant a Tree

Hello Fellow Landscapers!

After you have determined the variety and the proper place to plant your tree you need to know when you are going to plant it.

We usually do most of our planting in the fall or the spring. We do not recommend planting a tree in the middle of July. Trees need time to take root after planting, the June, July or August heat do not give them the best chances at taking root.

Fellow Landscapers Blog: Patios

Hello Fellow Landscapers!

The way that we like to install Patios is on a concrete base. When spending thousands of dollars on a landscaping project like a patio we do not want it to settle in a few years. We have found the best results from putting down a 4 inch concrete base before installing patio pavers.

Some companies install patios on a base of sand but we have found that this tends to settle in a few years. We want your patio to withstand the test of time.

Fellow Landscapers Blog: Retaining Walls

Hello Fellow Landscapers!

Today I wanted to talk about retaining walls. The types of walls that you can do are endless. However, there are two major types of retaining walls that we install. We either install wooden retaining walls made of architectural timbers or we make block retaining walls. This is where the options come in.

There are many different types, colors, and sizes of stone that you can use. The stone retaining walls that we install last for about 50 years and the architectural timber walls last for about 25 years. Many of our customers are installing retaining walls because the old wall is failing or because they have an area in their yard that is too much of a slope and is very hard or impossible to mow. Here I will include pictures of stone and timber walls that we have built.

There are tricks and specifics but we can’t tell you all in a blog post! Call our office and we can help you plan and give you ideas for possibilities and scenarios. Best of all, don’t hurt your back and let our skillful crews do the project for you!

Fellow Landscapers Blog: Landscape Stairs

Hello Fellow Landscapers!

This last week we installed landscape stairs for a client. This stair system ended up being 6 steps. We used a natural stone that was roughly 5.5” thick, 18” wide and 3-4’ long. It took a lot of man power and some planning to place these massive steps.

We had to remove the existing stair that was failing and dug into the hillside to set the steps. We installed the steps on a base of AB3. Once the warmer weather moves back in we will fill all of the joints with decorative rock mixed with dry concrete to prevent weeds and give it a natural finish.

It was a blast installing these and we hope that they last as long as the great Egyptian pyramids.

Fellow Landscapers Blog: Choosing a Tree Variety and Location

Hello Fellow Landscapers!

Planting trees is one of my favorite projects to do in a landscape. I have worked in the landscaping business for about 5 years now and have planted hundreds of trees. It is a project that makes you feel good and it drastically changes a landscape.

There are some major dos and don’ts when it comes to tree planting. The first thing you need to consider is what type of tree you would like to plant. You need to know how large the tree is going to become and how much sun or shade the tree variety needs. You do not want to plant a large variety of tree too close to your house, likewise, you do not want to plant a small shade tree in the middle of your yard that gets full sun.

Knowing the correct size of tree is a major factor when it comes to the longevity of the tree. You do not want to have to remove the tree in 10 to 15 years because it was too close to the house.

Fellow Landscapers Blog: Drainage

Hello Fellow Landscapers!

Drainage is the foundation on which we begin and build all of our landscaping projects. There are some simple ways to make sure that you have proper drainage. We first look to see that the grade, or slope, of the soil is away from the house. Most of the time we see pockets or voids in the soil right around the foundation of the home. This is caused by water coming in and settling in that area. Remember, water follows the path of least resistance.

Usually the water is coming in from the gutters. We like to build an underground drainage system by attaching 4 inch ADS pipe to the gutter and running it away from the house until we find the proper slope. This is then attached to a 9 inch square drain box. This is one of the most common solutions that we find in our landscapes.

Another solution is to add soil around the foundation to insure that it is sloping away properly. Pro Tip: When you find pockets of settled soil around your landscape do not fill with rock. This does not solve the problem, it only hides it.  You need to use topsoil that is packed in.

Fellow Landscapers Blog: Flagstones

Hello Fellow Landscapers!

Over the years we have installed several flagstone pathways. They are excellent pieces to connect landscapes or get you from your back door to your garage door. We have installed them in grass, mulch, and pea gravel.

One of my favorite flagstone pathways that we installed was in mulch in a secret garden. It led from the side yard to the back yard. It twisted through pines and hydrangea bushes. The backyard was so shaded that the grass would not grow. This made for a very muddy part of the landscape. The flagstone path and mulch eliminated the mud issue and gave the homeowner a beautiful and functional walking path.

Spring is just around the corner and this is a great time to look around your property. We are available to meet for free consultation and would provide our clients an itemized estimate, giving them the options of picking and choosing the right mix and amount of project they would like to do.

Blog: Landscape Apprentice Lesson #4

Pruning gives me the shivers! Honestly… what if I cut something that needs to stay? How much will I have to pay from my next paycheck so we can replace the shrub that I just destroyed? What if the plant doesn’t grow because I took its main live artery of flowing life-sustaining juices? Arrrrrrgggggghhhhhh…

Over the past few weeks, we’ve done quite a few jobs that we usually do in Spring time: Spring cleaning involves pruning. Pruning, trimming, cutting down, all of this boils down to two things. One, we remove dead branches and shoots; and, two, we help the plants prepare for healthy grow in the new growing season.

So, with all my trepidation and wondering, I learned my lesson: follow instructions and ask questions. As with most anything in life (unless you were born as the next super Einstein kid who knows how to play Mozzart’s No. 15 in B-Flat Major K. 450 when you were two years old!), practice makes perfect. However, anytime I’m in doubt, I pick up the phone, ask questions, and follow instructions.

Here’s a great resource that you can use for your trimming jobs during this season and throughout the year: What to Prune When in Your Garden for the Healthiest Plants (from Better Homes & Gardens). I may have to print the slides and put them under my pillow. Maybe this will help me next time I have to trim on a weeping willow tree…

Blog: Landscape Apprentice Lesson #3

Life is powerful. Look at this…

IMG_4487

I saw this at my garage door and it grabbed my attention. This week, one of the projects I had was cementing 4×4 posts for a future deck. The cement was hardened, super hard, in about a day, probably less than a day. In 28 days, a bag of cement, mixed with the right amount of water, will harden to withstand 4,000 lbs of weight over a square inch. Imagine that, imagine the power of cement: two tons of weight on top of space one inch by one inch! And yet, this unidentified green piece of flora has found its way through the cracks of the cement. It’s like waiving its chlorophyll-filled little leafs and telling the whole world, “hey, I am here… I am full of life… and the cement can’t stop me!”

Not a major lesson in landscaping, except to tell you that there are way to protect your cement and patios from unwanted flora, but something that made me think about the power of life. Few simple thoughts like…

  • life will find a way
  • life is creative
  • life is unstoppable (unless you find a way to kill it)
  • life is beautiful
  • life is a blessing
  • life is powerful

In the midst of tumultuous times, when our thoughts and hearts could be preoccupied with everything else but life, may we all find encouragement and strength in knowing that life will find a way and that life is powerful.

May we all live, and act, and speak in a way that brings life to those around us. Don’t be like the cement, be like the chlorophyllious plant.
